A bit of history

Sinclair Research, led by British inventor Clive Sinclair, pursued the idea that a useful computer could be small and affordable enough for almost any household. The ZX80 and ZX81 dramatically lowered the cost of entry into programming, but it was the ZX Spectrum, introduced in 1982, that became the company's defining machine.

Its compact design, colour graphics and enormous software library inspired a generation of programmers and helped create a thriving British games industry. Sinclair later explored business computers, portable television and electric transport, but the Spectrum remains its most enduring contribution to computing culture.
